Plumbing is a skilled profession that requires formal training. Just because a plumbing job is not as prestigious as that of a doctor or engineer, doesn’t mean that you don’t need special education. A plumber requires a combination of classroom learning and on-the-job training.

To acquire the skills needed to install and repair water and drainage systems a plumber needs to have proper training. Some vocational courses are also helpful such as plumbing and blueprint reading. There are different ways to achieve your goal of becoming a plumber.

First step in training process is to go for a vocational school or a community college. After learning the basics, a plumber goes for apprenticeship program and there he can become a licensed plumber. For taking admission in a training school you must be able to fulfill certain requisites like your age should be more than 18 years and you should have cleared your high school exams.

Basic training in vocational schools provide you a certificate for Associate of Plumbing and Heating Technology. As a result of this training a individual can do general tasks like pipe fitting, sewage disposing, use of various plumbing tools etc. This training program only builds a baseline.

Apprenticeship programs provide advanced training and paid experience. Skills and knowledge offered in this program include blueprint reading, assembling and installing new piping systems, maintaining and repairing fixtures, faucets, valves and piping, testing water and drainage piping and diagnosing water flow. Tool use and other specialized skills are also learned through on-the-job training.

Various responsibilities of plumber include installation and maintenance of water distribution system to make water available for drinking and other purposes, installation of various pipings, removal of waste water and many more.

Now plumbers are asked for license before hiring them. Different things are asked at different places like somewhere a plumber may be asked to show his experience, he should have knowledge of codes and regulations, should have cleared testing trade exam and many more.

There is enormous growth in this profession since 2006 and it is expected to grow much more till 2016 because of growing industrialization and house constructions.
