Compare Different Water Filtration Methods

Various water filters differ from each other because of many factors and one of the important factors is the technology used for filtering water. We will now compare different water filtration methods like Distillation, Carbon Absorption, Microporous Basic Filtration, Reverse Osmosis and Ultraviolet Radiations.

Distillation is an ancient method in which you heat water until it vaporizes. As the water vaporizes, bacteria, minerals and most of the other substances are left behind. The steam cools and condenses into relatively pure water. This is how we get pure water through distillation method.

It lacks oxygen and minerals and has a flat taste. Organics such as herbicides and pesticides with boiling points lower than that of water cannot be removed efficiently and can actually become concentrated in the product water. One more disadvantage of using it is the large amount of energy and water used by this filtration system.

Carbon filters are highly efficient in cleaning water and are not so expensive. The carbon layer in these filters absorbs a lot of impurities, organic chemicals, pesticides and allows only water to go through it. GAC (granular activated carbon) is considered to be very efficient in removing radon. These filters come in wide range of sizes and designs.

In a microporous filtration system, water goes through three different layers of filtration- depth layer, screen layer and surface layer. The first layer is depth layer for removing all the solid dust particles from the water. This layer removes around 98% of impurity from water. Surface layer comes after that and removes up to 99.99% of impurities. At last we have screen layer which provided us highly pure water by filtering out all the tiny particles, microorganisms and germs.

Reverse Osmosis is one of the most popular techniques of cleaning water. These filters use a semi permeable membrane to clean water. The porous size of this membrane is so small that it does not allow any of the contaminant or microorganism to pass through it.

RO filters work on the concept of osmotic pressure. A lot of pressure is required in this process. For most of the models, a strong pump is used to supply needed fluid pressure. But as a result they provide extremely pure water. These filters waste a lot of water.

Ultraviolet radiations are very hazardous for all the living organisms. Mercury lamps generating 254 nm UV light are considered to be good for producing these radiations. When these radiations fall on any microorganism or germ they just inactivate it and frees water from all the harmful germs.
